Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Collated (October 2013, March 2020). For discussion of this large and important cult inventory, concerned mainly with the description of cult images and written by the same scribe of KUB 38.1+, see Cammarosano 2018: 320-21. The newly identified join with ms. A2 provides a findspot for the tablet (the Great Temple in the Lower Town of Boğazköy). The join belongs to paragraph 3 in column i, referring to the cults of the town of Tiliura (see commentary on A2 iv 6′), and unveils the identity of the goddess whose cult image is described there, namely the otherwise unattested GURUN-ši-iš (see already HZL sub no. 193).

A2 i 2′: The deity GURUN-ši-iš (see already HZL sub no. 193) is not otherwise attested.

A2 i 3′-6′: For the restorations, cf. KUB 38.3 i 12-15.

A2 i 4′: Note that in KUB 38.3 both the spellings ši-tar and ši-it-tar are found.

A2 i 7′: The photo and the collation suggest to read KÙ.B[ABBAR] rather than KÙ.S[I22] (suggested by the copy). If this is correct, this would be the only known attestation of a silver šakantatar (“appliqué,” from šek- “to cut”). See already Groddek 2014: 54 with fn. 396.

A2 iv 6′: Neither Ḫindua (in the Lukka lands) nor Ḫinzuta (in the Hittite “Far East,” perhaps between the Hazar Gölü and Maden, see Alparslan 2017: 214-15) seem to be promising candidates for a restoration of the GN. Unfortunately, the geographical setting of the tablet is unclear: it seems problematical to equate the town Tiliura, inventoried there, with the town Tiliura mentioned in the treaty KUB 21.29, which is located in the north-east, perhaps south of Tokat (Barjamovic 2011: 387 fn. 1591, Corti 2017: 236; cf. Cammarosano 2018: 320), therefore far away both from the central provinces and from Ḫinzuta.
